Kicking off the new year with a holiday might just be what you need, and now could be the prime time to bag yourself a bargain. The January sales are stretching into February, and with airlines maintaining lower prices, booking this month might see you pocketing a handsome saving.

But deals aren’t just about snagging flight sales; there’s savvy in selecting less-trodden paths, where your budget stretches further for experiences, reports the Express. Laura Evans-Fisk, the head of digital engagement at eurochange, shares her insight, she said: “Whilst Brits can often snap up some cheaper deals by booking a package holiday, the destinations can be limited to the more popular resorts across Europe.

“If exploring a lesser-known destination is important to you, booking flights and accommodation separately is often the best way to go. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t still find a bargain deal.”

She highlights South Eastern Europe as a goldmine for cost-conscious travellers seeking beauty without the price tag, she said: “Countries in South Eastern Europe such as Bosnia, Slovenia and Montenegro have absolutely stunning scenery, but are very cheap to travel to and stay.”

Specifically, she sings praises for Sarajevo, Bosnia’s capital, noting it as an affordable hotspot. Laura added: “Saravejo is known as the ‘Jerusalem of Europe’, and has one of the most diverse cultures on the continent, making it one of the most intriguing cities you can visit.”

According to her, it’s a unique place where multiple religious landmarks coexist closely, she said: “It is one of the only places where you can visit a Mosque, a Catholic church, an Eastern Orthodox church and a synagogue in one place. Tucked inside a long, thin valley and surrounded by forested mountains, the city is a picture-perfect backdrop.

“Its broad mix of cultural influences means its architecture is also absolutely beautiful, and its restaurant scene is an eclectic mix of Turkish and Bosnian inspired offerings. And, with prices averaging at just £10 per person for a three-course meal, your money really does go far here.”

Even better, you can enjoy a pint for a mere £1.69 – a price that significantly undercuts any UK pub.
