You can’t believe everything you see on social media, it seems.
Especially when it involves two pseudo-celebrities and it takes place at night on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
Yes, apparently the heated exchange that occurred between Patrick Mahomes Sr. and John Rocker during Super Bowl week was, in fact, staged.
Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, admitted as much in court documents obtained by TMZ Sports.
While the elder Mahomes had received permission to attend the Super Bowl in New Orleans — he had been placed on probation last year after pleading guilty to a charge of DWI, third or more – court officials wanted to know more about the viral incident.
The court documents dated Feb. 13 state that Mahomes was given permission to travel from Feb. 7 through Feb. 10, but questions were raised when he missed a urine test on Feb. 11 and video of the squabble with Rocker surfaced.
The officials reportedly were set to admonish Mahomes for his behaviour before the former MLB pitcher confessed that the Rocker incident “was a staged altercation to get publicity for (a) celebrity boxing match that was set to take place in April 2025.”
Mahomes also ended up taking the urine test on Feb. 12 with the results coming back negative, according to the outlet.
While the 57-year-old avoided problems this time, a judge did state that an application to revoke his probation could be filed should he slip up again going forward.
In the viral video, Mahomes, wearing a red hoodie, and two other men standing in the street when Rocker approaches them.
The two appear to exchange words with a lot of gesturing and taunting at one another before things escalate.
Things don’t quite get physical, as Mahomes’ companions stand between them, while others look on.
Mahomes is seen getting pulled away while Rocker tosses his cup full of ice at him before taking off.
Someone on the video can be heard saying in disbelief, “Is that f***ing Johnny Rocker?”
The court documents settle any debate as to whether the scene with Rocker – a controversial ex-MLB closer – was a bid to stir up interest in their coming celebrity boxing match.
According to the contract that Mahomes signed with Barstool Sports for its “Rough N Rowdy” pay-per-view – which was attached to the court docs — the father of the three-time Super Bowl winner had agreed to spar with Rocker on Jan. 17, well before their incident in NOLA.
The contract also states that Mahomes’ pay for the matchup will start at $85,000 US, but could rise well past that depending on the event’s final PPV numbers.
Rocker, who played six MLB seasons with four teams, alleged last week the Chiefs QB and his camp are “doing EVERYTHING in their power to try and pull Pat Sr out of this fight.”
Patrick Mahomes II has yet to comment on the fight, which is set to take place in April.
