The Maple Leafs have had a new logo created to commemorate Black History Month.
And, on Saturday when the Carolina Hurricanes visit Scotiabank Arena, the Leafs will play host to their annual Black Excellence game.
Designed in partnership with Toji Nola, a designer and illustrator based in Toronto, the logo will be used on off-ice apparel for Leafs players and team staff.
The logo “celebrates a community which has heavily influenced the culture of our city and the sport of hockey” the Leafs said in a statement.
The logo’s 13 root branches symbolize ancestry and heritage, and mirror the 13 veins on the Leafs logo. Among the features in the special-edition logo are a set of triangles in the background, with each representing an aspect of Black excellence — community, leadership and character.
“Black Excellence is about recognition — not just of the exceptional achievements of individuals within the community, but of the visibility and inspiration those achievements bring,” Nola said in a statement. “The Toronto Maple Leafs are more than just a sports team — they’re an institution with a legacy that spans generations, bringing families and communities together as a source of pride and inspiration.
“To collaborate with such a storied organization on a project that celebrates Black Excellence is an incredible honour. The Leafs’ involvement in this initiative shines a light on a community with its own rich heritage of excellence, amplifying the message of belonging, identity and pride in a way that resonates far beyond the game.”
The game against the Hurricanes on Saturday at Scotiabank Arena will be the Leafs’ first match following the 4 Nations Face-Off break and will include a number of Black community initiatives.
On Sunday, the Toronto Marlies will play host to their annual Black Excellence game when the Manitoba Moose visits.
