More than half of us are failing to do the simple things that will protect our hearts, according to a new report for National Heart Month 2025. Research conducted by the charity Myocarditis UK found millions of people in the Uk are putting their heart health at risk every day.
A survey found 81% of people don’t prioritise attending regular health check-ups as a way to care for their heart health.Only 35% avoided smoking and/or tobacco products, and just 30% limited alcohol consumption to intentionally look after their heart.
“Heart health is something we all take for granted—until it’s too late,” said Andy Jansons, chairman of Myocarditis UK. “Too many people aren’t consciously choosing to make simple lifestyle changes that could save their lives. Taking care of your heart isn’t just important — it’s essential.”
Myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, is the third leading cause of sudden death in children and young adults in the UK, although it can affect anyone, at any age, and can occur in people with no history of previous illness. “These should be conscious choices we’re all making,” said Andy, whose son Alexander Jansons died from myocarditis at the age of 18.
“We need to be more proactive in prioritising regular check-ups, healthy eating, and staying active to reduce the risk of heart disease before it becomes a crisis.”
Managing your weight, eating a balanced diet, stopping smoking, bringing down high blood pressure and controlling cholesterol are all steps we can take to lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, which remains one of the country’s biggest killers.
