Hitting your protein goals is absolutely essential – as a macronutrient it’s the building block of our nutritional needs, which affects our energy levels and recovery. However, it can be difficult to hit these, especially if you find the taste of nutritional products particularly gross.
Cue Hotel Chocolat, who have teamed up with MyProtein for a bar with 18g of protein. This is pretty good for a protein bar: Grenade bars contain 21g (£18 for a pack of 12 from Amazon), whereas a tin of tuna contains around 23.5g.
The Hotel Chocolat x MyProtein bars are more balanced between taste and optimal nutrition, making it a good option for a treat at the end of a stressful day as opposed to a Mars bar, especially with 6.8g of sugar compared to Mars’ 30.5g. MyProtein currently has an offer on the bars, bringing down a pack of six to £14.39 from £17.99 and a pack of 12 to £23.99 from £29.99.

The bars are normally available in four different flavours – salted caramel, chocolate orange, coffee caramel and ginger – but only salted caramel are on sale at the moment. They use dark chocolate as opposed to milk, but the sugar content is slightly higher than milk-chocolate-users Grenade (2g). There are marginal calorie differences between the bars too: Grenade’s Cookie Dough is 212 calories, whereas the Hotel Chocolat x MyProtein ones are 236.
The Hotel Chocolat MyProtein bars have received a strong 4.51 out of 181 reviews from their launch. One happy shopper wrote: “Why don’t more companies use dark chocolate? This is by far the best protein bar I’ve tried. I was beginning to lose faith in my protein bars as the last few I tried weren’t great… But both flavours of the Hotel Chocolat range are seriously good.”

Another added: “Holy hell, these are good! By far the nicest tasting protein bar I’ve ever had, bar none, and that includes the usual layer bars by MP. They don’t taste like a standard protein bar; they’re gooey, the chocolate tastes like proper, rich dark chocolate without the chemical aftertaste. The filling is really good, not too chewy, and if I didn’t know, would take it for a standard chocolate bar. All protein bars should be like this… They’re addictive.”
A third remarked: “Absolute party in the mouth. Worth a buy, unsure if worth the price though that would be my only offput but honestly so tasty!”
Of the critical reviews, someone said: “Better than many out there but not up to expectations. Perhaps my judgment clouded by the cloudiness of the chocolate coating which probably means they were stored incorrectly before delivery.” Another added: “I was so excited to order these after reading the great reviews. Every single one has badly ‘bloomed’ & the chocolate is coated in a white film. They taste ok but slightly bitter & crumbly, not sure if that’s as they’ve obviously been stored incorrectly. Sad times.”
You can pick up the Hotel Chocolat MyProtein bars here. If you’re looking for a fully vegan alternative, Bulk are selling a six pack for £15.99. They come in flavours double chocolate brownie, chocolate chip banana bread and peanut butter.
The drawback with these are a smaller protein quantity (15g) and higher sugar content (11g). They boast a 4.3 out of 441 reviews.
