Air fryer enthusiasts are being cautioned about potential cleaning errors with their beloved kitchen gadget. The trendy cooking devices have seen a surge in popularity, particularly as energy costs continue to climb.

Air fryers are celebrated for their energy efficiency compared to traditional ovens and their ability to whip up healthier meals without the need for oil. However, users are advised to thoroughly ‘deep clean’ their air fryer at least once every month and to perform lighter cleans after each use, reports the Express.

Despite some models claiming to be dishwasher safe, experts warn against placing any parts of the air fryer in the dishwasher. Dr Richard Anderson, Head of Learning and Development at High Speed Training, emphasised the importance of regular maintenance: “It’s recommended that you give your air fryer a light clean after every use and a deeper clean every month, or every few uses if you regularly cook greasy foods.”

He elaborated on the deep cleaning process: “For a monthly deep clean, you’ll need to clean all the accessories and inside the appliance more thoroughly to remove burnt-on food, grease and odours.”

Dr Anderson also offered a tip for tackling tough grime: “Even though some air fryers are labelled as dishwasher-safe, dishwashers can strip the non-stick coating on the air fryer components. For stubborn, baked-on grease, try filling the tray or drawer with water, drop in a dishwasher tablet and leave to soak overnight. Then, simply rinse clean the next day.”

As the heating element is an integral part of the air fryer and cannot be removed, it’s crucial not to immerse it in water to avoid damaging the device. To clean it, use a fresh, damp cloth or sponge to wipe away any grease or dirt from the heating element.

Next, rinse the cloth in warm soapy water and repeat the wiping process until the heating coil is completely clean. If you encounter stubborn grease, a soft-bristled toothbrush paired with warm, soapy water can be used to gently scrub the heating element. Be careful not to get it overly wet to prevent damage.

Once cleaned, allow the heating element to dry thoroughly before turning the air fryer back on. Remember, some air fryers come with built-in filters that also require regular cleaning and maintenance. For specific advice related to your model, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
