A serving police officer has been charged with attempting to obtain sexual services from a person in return for payment.

Shane Joseph McDonald, with an address as PSNI headquarters at Knock Road in east Belfast, was not in court for the case last Monday. The 40-year-old PSNI sergeant has been charged that on “the 18th day of October 2022 attempted to obtain sexual services from a person using the name (redacted) in exchange for payment made”.

The Public Prosecution Service summonsed the officer, previously stationed in the Newry and Armagh area, to court following a file sent by the PSNI.

He is currently suspended from his post pending the outcome of the case.

There were no details of the offending read to the court, with the case postponed until February 24.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “Due to ongoing legal proceedings, it would be inappropriate to comment”.
