• Canadian Black Book has announced its 2025 Best Residual Value Awards
  • The awards note vehicles forecast to retain the highest percentage of their MSRP in four years
  • Toyota was the top brand for mainstream cars and trucks, while Genesis was most improved and Porsche’s Boxster was the top vehicle

Canadian Black Book (CBB) has announced the winners of its 2025 Best Residual Value Awards. The awards recognize vehicles forecast to have the highest value as a percentage of their MSRP (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) after four years.

CBB noted that SUVs tend to retain more of their value – not surprising, given their popularity with consumers – but that while electric cars have a higher residual value performance than their gasoline equivalents, electric crossovers and SUVs do not. Residual value is important for customers who plan to sell or trade their vehicles in future, and is a factor in a vehicle’s overall total cost of ownership.

Residual value overall has been dropping over the last two years, but it appears that’s primarily due to vehicles being in short supply during the pandemic-related issues. For the 2023 awards, the average vehicle retained 67.61% of its original value; in 2024, that fell slightly to 66.28%; and for 2025, it’s 60.32%.

For specific segments, SUVs/crossovers/trucks held an average of 63.53% of their value in 2025, down from 67.50% in 2024. The average residual value for cars is 58.45% in 2025, down from 64.08% last year.

Toyota took the top Overall Brand awards for both car and truck for 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year for it for cars, and the third for trucks. Genesis was named the Most Improved brand. The Porsche 718 Boxster was the highest-rated vehicle and for its second consecutive year, forecast to hold 70.40% of its value; followed by the Toyota Land Cruiser at 69.60%, and the Toyota Tundra at 68.00%.
