A doctor has revealed what he eats when he’s on call to boost his productivity and well-being during busy work days. Dr Kenji Tomita shared his food vlog on his popular YouTube channel Doctor Kenji, where he regularly posts about his experience as a London-based doctor.
In his ‘What I Eat in a Day’ video, Dr Tomita told followers: “I have a really exciting day for you guys. I’m actually in Psychiatry and I’m on an on-call shift…. When you’re on call, and you’re busy, and you’re tired, and you’re stressed, what you eat is even more important.
“You really need that energy from your food to keep you going throughout the entire day. We’re going to be starting at 9am and finishing all the way at 9.30 pm.” He explained that he opted for a Huel meal for breakfast for convenience.
Dr Tomita said: “This is not sponsored at all. I just love the product. I’ve had it for the last two years.” However, he said he’d typically opt for meal-prepped overnight oats when he has more time.
As per the NHS, overnight oats made with 150g of high-fibre porridge oats, natural yoghurt, and fruit can deliver up to 10g of protein and 8g of fibre. Both are essential for a healthy diet.
At lunchtime, Dr Tomita enjoyed a Diet Cola with a homemade meal. It included Brazillian chicken, Brazillian beans, vegetables, and white rice. As such, his meal was once again high in protein and nutrients, and it contributed to his five a day.
Showing off his lunchbox, he revealed he enjoys drinking coffee. As for snacks, the doctor said he snacked on peanuts throughout the day and had instant oats around 7pm. “I highly recommend you guys have some sort of snack that you enjoy that you like that is really quick,” he added.
Finally, for dinner, Dr Tomita and his partner enjoyed air-fried salmon with aubergine, mixed with pasta, onions, garlic, olive oil, spinach, lactose-free cream, and parmesan. He concluded: “All in all, probably around 3,000 calories to keep me going on this long on-call shift.”
As with all ‘What I Eat in a Day’ videos, it’s important to remember everyone has different dietary requirements. The NHS says an average man needs 2,500kcal a day and an average woman needs 2,000kcal a day. However, this can vary depending on your age, weight, height and how much exercise you do.
