Choosing a baby name is a significant decision, not to be taken lightly. After all, unless your child opts for a name change later in life, it’s a label they’ll carry forever.
One mother fears she may have made a mistake with her son’s name, suspecting that she and her husband “took it too far” with their unique choice. Their son, now eighteen months old, has never received negative comments about his name, but the mum feels a constant sense of being “secretly judged”.
In a Reddit post, she disclosed her son’s name as Oberon, often shortened to “O.B.” or “Bear”. While her husband remains fond of the name, she’s beginning to regret it. She added that she’s never had these thoughts about her first son, Pascal, so she’s concerned she’s made a big mistake this time.
She confessed: “I began doubting the choice a few weeks later, and it’s been eating at me ever since. His name is Oberon. My partner still loves it. We live in a part of the United States where offbeat names are very common, and no one has said anything negative. But despite all that, I still feel like we took it too far and like everyone must be secretly judging our weird name choice whenever I tell it to anyone.”
The mum-to-be is expecting her third son and has been grappling with doubts about the name Oberon, which has led her to reconsider the choice for her upcoming arrival. She revealed that while she and her husband have pondered various names, Ambrose keeps resurfacing as a favourite.
She explained: “We’re expecting another boy soon. We’re still both drawn to uncommon and off-beat names, but this time around I’ve also been suggesting more traditional names too like Hugo, Desmond, Solomon or Leander. But we also feel a strong pull to Ambrose which seems like a closer match to his brothers.”
She questioned whether choosing Ambrose might be setting herself up for future regret and if it’s too similar to Oberon. Feedback from commenters on her post was encouraging. They described her naming preferences as “unusual but not crazy” and advised her not to overthink them.
One commenter reassured her: “I like the name and definitely don’t think it’s weird or out there, and I’m older if that makes any difference. I also like Ambrose. So go with it.” Another praised Oberon as “a great name”. They added: Uncommon and strong, but not weird! ”
A third person stated: “None of them are bad names. Uncommon, sure, but spelt normally. And certainly known as names. I kinda like Oberon. Pascal and Ambrose are not my personal style, but I think they all go well together.”
