These shoes weren’t made for campaigning.

While Liberal leadership front-runner Mark Carney is running a campaign to address Canada’s high cost of living, among other things, he’s believed to be wearing Zegna sneakers costing just over $2,000 on the campaign trail.

The designer footwear, listed online for $2,030, are thought to be the shoes Carney wore while playing hockey during a campaign stop in Ottawa on Sunday when he was endorsed by Ottawa South MP David McGuinty.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre noted the footwear in a post on X, writing, “Trying to be a normal guy playing hockey in $2000 shoes. He’s Just Like Justin.”

Social media reaction to the Carney footwear was mostly negative, though some did question if the footwear worn by the leadership hopeful were indeed the Zegna ones. The Sun has reached out to Carney’s camp for a response.

One user commented of Carney, “He is a status shopper for that feeling of superiority,” while another person wrote: “For perspective, that is almost three months income for a disabled Canadian.”

More users responded with such comments as “That’s a lot of dough for a pair of shoes!” and “Food prices no problem for him.”
