A top dermatologist has revealed the “worst mistake” people are making with their hair – which then leads to hair loss – and it’s very common.

Many of us strive for luscious, healthy hair, as it can significantly boost one’s self-esteem and satisfaction with their looks. In the pursuit of expert advice, many individuals turn to social media, where a plethora of professionals are eager to offer their knowledge and tips to a wide audience.

Some have even garnered large followings, with people appreciative and loyal to their assistance. Dr Aamna Adel, a London-based dermatologist registrar, is one such professional who has gained a dedicated following on social media through her regular posts on TikTok, where she addresses various skin issues and haircare topics.

In a recent video, Dr Adel recorded herself in front of a mirror and added the words “the WORST mistake I see in clinic as a dermatologist…” above her. Facing the camera, she said: “Okay, I have to talk about this. As you guys know, I’m a dermatologist, I specialise in hair. I see hair loss in clinic literally all of the time.”

The ‘worst mistake’ a top dermatologist keeps seeing

She continued: “I don’t know who needs to hear this, there is no such thing as safe hair extensions. It does not matter if you’re using i-tip, or if you’re using tapes, or whatever it is that you are using.”

Dr Adel issued a stark warning regarding hair extensions: “I cannot begin to tell you the number of women I have seen in clinic that have been experiencing hair loss and traction alopecia because of the literal weight of the hair extension on their hair.

“Honestly, it’s kind of the same story every time, which is that everyone feels like they had really thick and luscious hair and then they started using hair extensions and then everything basically went to s***.

“That’s literally because the hair extensions are pulling your hair out and they’re causing traction alopecia. So, if you are thinking – even if it crossed your mind for a millisecond – about getting hair extensions, please, please, I promise you, it’ll be the biggest mistake that you could ever make for your hair. Don’t do it – honestly, just avoid.”

In response to Dr Adel’s comments, numerous people weighed in with their opinions. One person remarked: “saw this video just in time”.

Someone else questioned: “Clip ins safe?” Dr Adel responded: “if you use them sparingly once in a while, definitely not every day”.

Another person disclosed their personal experience: “Yup my hair extensions broke my hair I had to cut so much, it’s finally long and healthy again”, while yet another confirmed: “Definitely agree with this! I’ve had tape in hair extensions twice! Now I have sooo much hair fall and my hair is thin now [sad face emoji]. Don’t do it girls”.

As per the NHS, it’s normal to shed between 50 and 100 strands of hair daily, and this isn’t typically a cause for concern. However, in some instances, it could indicate an underlying medical condition.

If you’re anxious about your hair loss, it’s advisable to consult with a GP.
