Schools break up in around 20 weeks, with this kicking off the summer holiday season for millions of UK families. While many of us have already started to book trips abroad for the summer, this brings with it the financial burden of having to pay for it too.

Holidays can be really expensive, and while there are monthly payment plans available to pay for flights and accommodation in instalments, it’s often the spending money that can be difficult to save up.

But to help holidaymakers boost their bank balance in time for their summer getaway, Haypp has launched a holiday savings calculator, and Jenny Edam, finance expert from Haypp, has revealed how you could save more than £1,900 in time for summer, by following four simple steps.

Firstly, Jenny recommends ditching alcohol to get a bit of extra cash by the summer. On average Brits spend around £15.30 a week on alcohol, looking at this cost over the next 20 weeks until you get to July, you can save around £306.

By making a brew at home instead of venturing out to buy a flat white or latte, you could save £476 over the next 20 weeks, as the average Brit spends £3.40 per day on a cup. Next time you fancy a coffee, stick the kettle on and you could save hundreds of pounds.

Jenny’s third tip is the one that will save the most money, although it doesn’t apply to everyone. But if you smoke and you quit, not only will you boost your health significantly, you could save around £50.79 a week – or £1,015 by the summer.

If you’re looking to quit the habit for good, then alternatives, such as nicotine pouches are a great option, as not only are they smoke-free and discrete in comparison to cigarettes, but they are also cheaper, meaning you’ll still be able to save money while leaving the harmful cigarettes behind.

And lastly, Jenny recommends foregoing takeaways to save money, as these cost the average person in the UK £9 per week, per person. This works out at £36 a month, or more if you’re paying for the rest of the household.

So by ditching these you could save upwards of £180 by the time July rolls around.
