Receiving a Valentine’s Day gift from an ex-partner can be quite awkward.
With Valentine’s Day (February 14) just around the corner, many of us are busy planning romantic gestures and buying presents for our significant others. But what if you received a package from your former partner? This was the unexpected situation one woman found herself in after splitting from her husband a year ago due to his infidelity.
The woman ended her marriage after discovering her husband had impregnated his mistress. In a Reddit post, she revealed that she still lives in their former shared home, which her ex-husband hasn’t visited in a year. Despite this, he frequently receives mail at the old address and only recently collected his remaining belongings.
So when a parcel arrived at her doorstep, she didn’t think twice about opening it. However, she was taken aback when she discovered a necklace inside with her ex-husband’s name on the shipping label. It transpired that the package was not intended for her but was a Valentine’s Day present for her ex’s new partner.
She said: “Yesterday I received a package, and without thinking, I opened it on my way in the door, thinking it was one of my many Amazon buys. Well, it’s a jewellery box with two rather cheap-looking necklaces inside, something I didn’t order. I double-checked the shipping label, and it’s my ex-husband’s name. This is clearly a Valentine’s present for the new girl, as the rhinestones are green, which I immediately recognised as her month’s birthstone.”
She believes that her former partner intentionally used her address since the sender wouldn’t have had it otherwise, as he’d never ordered from them before. The dilemma she faces now is whether to discard the misplaced gift, admitting she feels “guilty” about denying someone their purchase.
Nevertheless, people responding to her story have encouraged her to trash it, suggesting her ex is messing with her on purpose, deserving no courtesy in response.
One person remarked: “He’s deliberately sending things to your address to mess with you. Throw it away and block his number. You deserve peace.” Another added: “The universe literally hand-delivered you some petty justice, and you’re debating it? Girl, that package tripped and fell into the trash. Oops.”
