Wayne Rooney has been criticised by football fans after he accused Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta of speaking too much on the touchline during matches.

The 39-year-old is currently a free agent, having been axed by Plymouth on New Year’s Eve.


Appearing on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, Rooney admitted that he thought Guardiola and Arteta could be ‘distracting’ players by saying too much.

He said: “It’s weird now, I think if you look at Pep and Arteta and the way they are on the touchline…

“Constantly like, going on at the players. That would have… that would have distracted me!

“For me I’m thinking if they have to do that for 90 minutes of a game then the players haven’t taken in what they’ve done.

“Give these players a chance to go and do what they’ve actually trained on.”

However, Rooney’s comments have sparked a backlash with fans criticising his own managerial record.

He was sacked by Plymouth just before the New Year having previously toiled at Birmingham, while he’s also had problematic spells at D.C United and Derby County in the past.

One fan fumed: “Rooney judging Pep and Arteta on their management and coaching skills is hilarious.”

A second stated: “Yeah because Rooney’s approach to management is working so well…”

Another took aim at Rooney by saying: “Rooney talking about management is laughable in itself.”

And a fourth brutally said: “Rooney talking about management techniques is like Stevie Wonder trying to be an F1 driver.”

While Rooney has struggled in management so far, he’s got no plans to give up.

Instead, the England icon remains determined to make a success of whatever job he lands next.

Speaking recently, Rooney said: “”I would like to go back in [to management].

“But it would have to be the right club. Certainly the right club.”

Gary Neville, who previously toiled as Valencia manager, was stunned by Rooney’s remarks.

But the Manchester United and Everton legend stuck to his guns by saying: “I think you always have that ego don’t you?

“You always have that confidence you could go in and get the best out of a bad or difficult situation.

“Obviously, that wasn’t the case [at Plymouth]. I am going to enjoy time with my family, though.”

Rooney also revealed that he’d have ‘no problem’ taking over an Under-21s team or working on somebody elses coaching staff.
