Drivers are being warned of prolonged closures to a major motorway used by around 150,000 people every day as repair works continue.

From 10pm on Saturday, February 8, until 5am on Sunday, February 9, the M25 will be closed in both directions at Junction 3.

This will include the anti-clockwise and clockwise roads on J3 and the roundabout as National Highways continue waterproofing and resurfacing works.

The road will again be closed from 10.30pm on Sunday evening until 5.30am on Monday, February 10, which could have an enormous impact on drivers looking to use the busy route.

The M25 Dartford Crossing

Drivers are being warned of potential disruption at the M25 Dartford Crossing this weekend

PA

The Dartford Crossing connects the Kent town of Dartford with Thurrock in Essex via the A282 and acts as a key route for many people commuting between the two counties and into London.

National Highways has warned that while the closures have a timetable, they could change if there are delays or weather issues.

Steelwork inspections and repairs will continue in the west tunnel during weeknights between 9pm and 6am, while weekly tunnel safety inspections take place on weekends between 10pm and 5am.

The organisation stated that the east tunnel would remain open overnight to maintain travel in the northbound direction while work takes place in the west tunnel.

The closures generally take place between 10pm and 6am to keep disruption to a minimum when fewer people will be using the route to travel.

The Dartford Crossing is only designed to handle 135,000 vehicles per day, although the average is now 150,000 a day. On the busiest days, up to 180,000 vehicles use the route.

Previous closures in January saw a contraflow diversion route put in place through the east tunnel to maintain southbound travel.

A height restriction was also in place in the northbound direction for vehicles between 4.8 metres and five metres high.

Drivers will be hoping that disruption is kept to a minimum with motorists frequently dealing with road traffic accidents on the busy route.

On Friday, February 7, three of four lanes on the A282 near the Dartford Crossing were closed following a major collision between two lorries.

The accident, which happened on the A282 southbound between J1 and J1b, saw around 90 minutes of delays, with a staggering seven miles of congestion.

Recovery took place with National Highways: South-East eventually being able to reopen the road after around two hours.
