Seeking a second opinion on your baby’s name can be a double-edged sword.
Sharing potential names with family and friends can help new parents identify potential issues, such as unwanted nicknames or spelling difficulties. However, it can also lead to hurt feelings if loved ones don’t share the same enthusiasm for the chosen name.
One expectant couple found themselves in this predicament when their family became divided over their choice of name for their daughter. In a Reddit post shared by the baby’s aunt, she revealed that her brother and sister-in-law have chosen the name Miranda for their child, due in two months.
Despite being a classic name with roots in Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the family is split down the middle, with some members finding the name “ugly” while others think it’s “dated”.
The aunt shared: “My Brother and sister-in-law are considering this name for their daughter, due in two months. The extended families are extremely divided on the name.
“I like it. I don’t think it’s particularly classic or trendy or tragically dated and ugly (which are basically the three camps the rest of the family are falling into), but I think it’s cute, resilient, and holds the possibility of different potential nicknames as little Miranda finds herself.”
She insisted that parents should have the final say on their daughter’s name, regardless of family opinions. Many commenters echoed this sentiment, regarded Miranda as a “fine” name.
One person commented in support of the parents: “It’s a fine name, very established. I feel bad for the parents having to contend with the extended family.” Another individual expressed their approval, stating: “I like it – maybe a little unexpected, but a solid name.”
A further comment highlighted the uniqueness of Miranda amidst popular trends: “Miranda is a refreshing change from all the currently popular names! I know a Miranda – she also goes by Mandy. It’s a great name! Why on Earth does it matter what extended families think?! Does everyone in the extended family get a vote? Such a weird thing for relatives to sit around and discuss with a perfectly normal name.”
