A pub in East Bristol serves the city’s best pizzas, according to our readers. Last month, we asked you where the best pizzas can be found in the city.

We then announced the shortlist with the top five that got the most mentions. And, after more than 300 votes were cast, the Red Lion pub on Whitehall Road is the clear winner after receiving 164 votes.

The popular pub has an average rating of 4.6 on Google, having had more than 400 reviews. One reviewer said: “Brilliant pizzas, good beer and very eclectic music.”

And another said the pub has improved over time, saying: “Had a bad experience with the kitchen here a few years back but tried it again and they’ve redeemed themselves. Great vegan pizza.

“The pub itself is one of the best spots in Bristol. Cheap, friendly staff, hosts great music promotions.”

While another reviewer described the pizzas as “delicious”. They wrote: “Awesome old skl Bristol vibes if you enjoy dnb, punk music or anything underground. They really do put on epic nights.

“They also serve delicious stone baked pizza. It gets extremely lively at the weekend.”

Back in 2022, the pub in Whitehall was labelled “Britain’s wokest pub” for refusing to sell several popular drinks for ethical reasons. For example, the Red Lion doesn’t sell Thatchers because its makers have apparent links to Edward Colston and slavery.

The community pub on Whitehall Road, which was part of the veg box scheme providing food to vulnerable people during the pandemic, has always taken an ethical stance in its stock choices.

It has never served Coca-Cola or Heineken products and also stopped buying the Polish larger Tyskie after the company that owns it was linked to an anti-LGBT movement. At the time of the decision to stop serving Tyskie, the pub posted its reasoning on social media and despite the popularity of the drink, had virtually no backlash.

In contrast, the disappearance of the famous Somerset drink caused a “massive fuss” at the time.

On second place came Pizzaland on Coldharbour Road (110 votes), followed by Bertha’s on The Old Gaol Stables. It was closely followed by Pizzarova which has three restaurants across the city (22), and Bosco, which has two eateries (17 votes).

In November, we revealed that a pub in Bristol city centre serves the city’s best Sunday roast, according to our readers. After more than 700 votes were cast, The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer on King Street was the clear winner after receiving 310 votes.

We have also found out where the city’s best greasy spoon is. After nearly a thousand votes were cast, Abbots Kitchen on Dundry Road, in Whitchurch, South Bristol, became the winner after receiving 432 votes.

We also asked our readers to recommend the best fish and chip shop in Bristol and, after just over a thousand votes were cast, Marios Fish Bar on Pool Road, Kingswood, was the clear winner after receiving 586 votes. And lastly we have found a takeaway in South Bristol serves the best Chinese food in the city, according to our readers.
