- A new show is based around a Saint John, New Brunswick car wash
- The comedy will have five episodes to start
- A vintage Bricklin makes an appearance
Customers of Bell Fibe TV will soon have a Canadian based, car-centric comedy show to add to their viewing roster. Car Wash Wars, described as being set in an “absurdist, comedic” take on the New Brunswick city of Saint John, centres around the character Kayla Polley who takes over her dad’s manual car wash business after his forced retirement. All good shows need an antagonist, so enter one Mr. Dulse – a wealthy oligarch who opens an automated car wash as competition. And by the way, dulse is a type of seaweed.
Bell has ordered five episodes so far, starting with the pilot in which Kayla is challenged to wash all the molasses off a car. Sticky situation, then. According to the show’s information page, this isn’t the last time molasses makes an appearance, with the fifth episode also apparently involving the stuff. In case you’re wondering, Crosby’s Molasses has its headquarters in Saint John and a bulk plant about 10 minutes’ drive from where Car Wash Wars is shot, though there’s no indication of any support or tie-in between Crosby’s and the show. Maybe someone just got a good deal on a barrel of the stuff.
Speaking of filming locations, the show is set at an actual real-life car wash near what locals might know as the city’s Haymarket Square. The clapboard hut, which sits in the parking lot of an old bowling alley, has been home to car washing business for the better part of a decade. This being New Brunswick, you know there’s a Bricklin involved at some point, as well. Episode descriptions include descriptions of a bionic arm and squeegee gangs, reinforcing the comedic description by showrunners. Hey – we could all use a laugh these days; it’s in good fun.
Episodes will be released weekly on both the Fibe TV1 channel and its partner Fibe TV App throughout the month of February and into March.
