A games company has launched a new title designed for families to play together as research shows that family time boosts mental health. A 2021 Clemson University study found that families who play digital games together reported improved communication and bonding, with parents and children using gameplay as a “channel of communication” to strengthen relationships.

And a Savanta study last year found that 53% of UK mums play video games with their children, with parents citing “spending quality time” as their primary motivation.

To continue the trend, MixRift’s has launched a new free game Crit Attack, a classic shoot-’em-up, on Meta Quest. The game transforms your living room into an arcade where the whole family can team up to zap cute monsters.

Co-founder Bobby Voicu said: “What makes Crit Attack special is its ability to bring families together. Parents who grew up playing Space Invaders and Galaxian can instantly connect with the gameplay, while their kids are blown away by the mixed reality elements. It’s familiar enough to be instantly playable but innovative enough to feel fresh and exciting.”

Mixed reality gaming is surging in popularity across the UK, with the market expected to reach £1.3 billion this year. Bobby said: “Everyone remembers the magic of arcade games – no complicated storylines, just pure, instant fun. The response from British families during our testing has been incredible – there’s something special about watching three generations take turns, cheering each other on, just like in the old arcade days.”
