Former Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos has signed a one-year contract with Mexican club Monterrey, choosing the symbolic shirt number 93 to commemorate his historic Champions League moment.
The 38-year-old defender, who had been a free agent since leaving Sevilla in June, will wear the number in tribute to his famous 93rd-minute equaliser in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
The match ultimately ended in a 4-1 victory for Real Madrid, securing one of Ramos’s four Champions League titles with the Spanish giants.
During his illustrious 16-season spell at Real Madrid, Ramos amassed an incredible 671 appearances and scored 101 goals from his defensive position.

Before joining Monterrey, Ramos had brief spells at Paris Saint-Germain, where he made 58 appearances, and two stints with his hometown club Sevilla, totalling 87 matches.
Throughout his Madrid career, Ramos was known for wearing the number 4 shirt, making his choice of 93 at Monterrey particularly significant.
Real Madrid released a statement on Friday morning acknowledging their former captain’s new chapter.

The Spanish giants added: “Eternally grateful, @SergioRamos. We wish you lots of luck and success.”
Ramos’s success extended beyond club football, with a remarkable international career spanning from 2005 to 2021.

The defender earned 180 caps for Spain, finding the net 23 times for his national team.
He was instrumental in Spain’s golden era, contributing to three consecutive major tournament victories.
These triumphs included European Championship wins in both 2008 and 2012, with a FIFA World Cup victory in 2010 sandwiched between them.
