• Ford is recalling nearly 80,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada for a faulty rearview camera
  • The rearview camera may not display images correctly, or at all, and a fix is still under development
  • Heavy-duty Ford F-Series are affected, along with the Expedition and Lincoln Corsair SUVs

Another day, another Ford recall. I guess that’s not entirely fair for me to say, but Ford finished 2024 being crowned the King of Recalls, and, well, let’s put it this way, we wrote about another Ford recall just six days ago. This time, some of Ford’s bigger models (including one of its luxury Lincoln sport-utilities) are being recalled due to a faulty rearview camera. In the U.S., some 72,624 Ford vehicles are being recalled, and on this side of the border, it’s another 7,698, says Transport Canada.

According to the recall report provided to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the faulty rearview camera may not display images correctly. In fact, it may not display anything at all. Since 2018, Canada and the U.S. have required all new vehicles to have a backup camera (apparently a properly functioning one isn’t as important). If the rearview camera doesn’t work correctly, it could reduce the driver’s visibility while backing up, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.

The recalled vehicle models include:

Ford will notify affected owners by mail; however, the fix is still, uh, under development. Yes, Ford is still working on figuring out the root cause of the problem as repairs so far haven’t solved the issue. The company says the problem may be a specific batch of cameras, supplied by Magna. The auto manufacturer’s recall report claims Ford’s been testing similar cameras provided by Magna, and comparing the cameras from the “suspect period and the remaining population” showed differences, but for unknown reasons.

Once a fix has been identified, which may likely be replacing the faulty camera with a new one, Ford will again notify owners who can take their vehicle to a Ford-Lincoln dealership to have the issue resolved, free of charge.
