Former Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck has been rushed to hospital after falling ill during pre-match warm-ups ahead of Chesterfield’s League Two match against Doncaster Rovers.

The 33-year-old ex-Premier League player required emergency medical attention at the SMH Group Stadium on Thursday evening.


Fleck was seen being stretchered off by emergency services staff approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled 7:45pm kick-off time.

The medical emergency resulted in a 10-minute delay to the match, pushing the start time back to 7:55pm.

The incident occurred during warm-ups on the pitch, with emergency responders quickly attending to the former Scotland international.

Chesterfield FC released a statement confirming the situation: “We can confirm that John Fleck has been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure after being taken ill during the pre-match warm-up.”

The midfielder was admitted to hospital for precautionary checks following the concerning incident.

Michael Jacobs was brought into the starting lineup to replace Fleck following the medical incident.

The match faced a second delay just six minutes after kick-off when a spectator in the crowd became unwell.

This additional interruption lasted 12 minutes as medical staff attended to the ill crowd member.

Fleck joined Chesterfield from free agency in September 2023, having made just one league appearance for Blackburn Rovers prior to the move.
