Additional charges have been laid in the death of a 79-year-old resident in the care of an assisted living facility in Oshawa.
Durham Regional Police said officers were called on April 1, 2023, in relation to a death at Aspira Traditions of Durham Retirement Living at 1255 Bloor St. E.
Police said a 79-year-old female resident was found on a bench outside of the facility. Paramedics brought the woman to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An investigation revealed the vulnerable woman entered a stairwell and exited the building at about 7:30 p.m. on March 31, 2023. Over the course of the night, the woman allegedly attempted to gain access to the building, but was unable to because the doors were locked. She sat on a bench and was located the following morning without vital signs.
An autopsy was performed and the cause of death was due to exposure to the elements.
Two employees of Aspira Traditions were charged in December 2024. Padmini Kisseur, 34, of Oshawa, and Danika Harrison, 29, of Newcastle, were charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessities for life to a person under their charge.
Jessica White, 32, and Aspira Traditions of Durham Retirement Living have since been charged with one court each of criminal negligence causing death.
