George Russell has declared he is “absolutely” ready to become Formula 1 World Champion in 2025 with Mercedes.
The British driver’s bold statement comes as Mercedes enters a new era following Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari.
Russell, who has spent the last three seasons racing alongside the seven-time world champion, will now step into the role of team leader at the Silver Arrows.
The declaration, made in an interview with Sky F1 just minutes ago, signals Russell’s intent to capitalise on his elevated position within the team.

At just 18 years old, Kimi Antonelli will join Russell as his new teammate, marking a stark contrast to the previous dynamic at Mercedes.
The young F2 race winner comes from Mercedes’ Junior Team programme, having secured two victories in his campaign.
This partnership represents a complete reversal for Russell, who moves from working alongside one of F1’s most experienced drivers to mentoring a rookie talent.
The change follows Hamilton’s decision to end his remarkable 12-season tenure with Mercedes, during which he established himself as the team’s most successful driver.
Mercedes’ recent performance suggests they’re moving in the right direction for a title challenge.
The team secured four grand prix victories in 2024, marking significant progress in their recovery journey.
The 2025 season is shaping up to be potentially historic, with four teams in contention for championship glory.
Mercedes will face strong competition from McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari as all teams approach the new campaign with title aspirations.

The team hasn’t been in genuine championship contention since 2021, but their recent improvements have raised expectations for the upcoming season.
Speaking to Sky F1, Russell expressed unwavering confidence in his championship potential.
“Yeah, absolutely,” he stated when asked if he could rise to a title challenge.

“I feel ready, everybody in the team is so motivated, and I feel that these years, sort of in trial and error, that every time we’ve had a chance to win, we’ve won,” Russell explained.
The 26-year-old emphasised his optimism about Mercedes’ prospects.
“That’s what gives me the optimism that if we do have the car, we can achieve it,” he said.
“We’re working as hard as we can for it to be this year. But everybody is fully on board and it’s going to be an exciting season.”
