Conor McGregor has donated £20,000 a boxer currently in critical condition after a weekend bout at the Ulster Hall.

John Cooney (28), from Co Galway, was rushed to hospital after a technical knockout led to him losing his Celtic super-featherweight belt against Nathan Howells on Saturday night.

Earlier this week, show promoter Mark Dunlop of MHD Promotions has confirmed Mr Cooney is still receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

In a statement, MHD Promotions said: “Following John Cooney’s epic title fight at the Ulster Hall on Saturday evening, John was assessed by the onsite medical team of the British Boxing Board of Control and swiftly taken to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital for further treatment.

“On arrival at the RVH, it was discovered that John had an intracranial haemorrhage and underwent immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain.

“John is currently in the intensive care unit and in the the hospital’s capable hands of the ICU team.”

A GoFundMe page was set up to support Mr Cooney during his recovery.

£43,430 raised has been raised so far with a goal of £70,000.

The former Mixed Martial Arts star has made the biggest single donation so far, £20,000.

He also shared the GoFundMe page on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Keeping Irish boxer and Galway native John Cooney in my thoughts and prayers for a full recovery,” he said.

“Here is a link to the Go Fund where you can support John and his family after he suffered a tragic accident in the ring.”
