A retired gas engineer from Surrey is celebrating after winning more than £68,000 in a EuroMillions lottery draw.

The winner, known only as Mr P, scooped £68,232.20 after matching five main numbers in the draw on January 14.

The substantial windfall marks an impressive start to 2025 for the lucky Surrey resident, who chose to remain anonymous after his win.

Mr P secured his win through the National Lottery app, which automatically checks numbers and sends email notifications to winners.

But despite the substantial windfall, the Surrey resident has opted for a modest celebration at his boozer of choice.

The winner has revealed that he plans to mark the occasion with “a few pints down the local”.

He joins the ranks of over nine million players who win prizes each week on The National Lottery’s range of games.

Players using the National Lottery’s interactive platforms can choose whether to go public with their win or maintain their anonymity – as Mr P has done.

Andy Carter, senior winners’ advisor at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, said: “Wow, what excitement for Mr P, who banked over £68k on EuroMillions. What a fantastic start to his year. Huge congratulations!”

But Mr P isn’t the only lottery winner to have embarked on a low-key celebration with his windfall.

Neil Leighton, 26, from Herefordshire, won £1million on a National Lottery Instant Win Game in 2023.

Frances and Patrick Connolly

But in the face of becoming an instant millionaire, Leighton’s first splurge was a humble ham, cheese, and salami sandwich from popular chain Subway.

Meanwhile, Frances Connolly, 58, and her husband Patrick, 60, from County Armagh in Northern Ireland, scooped the fourth-biggest UK lottery prize on record at the time on New Year’s Day in 2019.

But much like Leighton, the pair’s first purchase after winning was surprisingly modest – a £12 pack of M&S knickers.
