Daral Sovann, the victim of Toronto’s first homicide of the year, was “a hardworking and kind person who could light up a room with his light-hearted attitude and unique sense of humor,” according to a GoFundme set up by the dead man’s partner.
Sovann, 27, was found with serious injuries in the Annex — Bloor St. and Madison Ave. — around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 26. He later died in a hospital.
Brooklynn Walsh, 24, and Cameron Brown, 21 — both of Oshawa — are each charged with second-degree murder.
As of Tuesday evening, GoFundMe organizer Karissa Sookdeo had raised just over $4,100, with a goal of $15,000.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the tragic loss of Daral Sovann, who was taken from us far too soon in a senseless act of violence,” Sookdeo wrote.
“His passing has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him, and we are now coming together to support his loved ones during this difficult time. Alongside Daral, his cherished pets—Missy and Tanjiro—were constant reminders of the joy and love he shared every day.”

Sookdeo said the money raised will go towards bringing his brother to Canada from Cambodia to pick up his ashes and deliver them to his mother.
“Daral’s youngest brother, who resides in Cambodia, is making the journey to honor his memory and bring him back home for a dignified farewell,” wrote Soodeo.
“By supporting this fundraiser, you’ll help ease the financial burden of funeral costs and enable Daral’s brother to travel to Canada for a heartfelt final farewell. Your contribution also helps bring Daral’s ashes to his mother in Cambodia, giving her the opportunity to say goodbye to her beloved son in the dignified manner he truly deserves.”
