As the world unites on World Cancer Day on February 4, 2025, experts at Avangart Dental Clinic are urging people to pay closer attention to changes in their mouth that could signal early signs of mouth cancer, especially the lesser-known symptoms that often go unnoticed.
Mouth cancer cases are on the rise in the UK, with recent figures showing more than 8,800 diagnoses annually – a 34% increase in the last decade. Yet, many people are still unaware of the subtle warning signs that could lead to early detection and improved survival rates, the experts said.
Lesser-known mouth cancer symptoms
While persistent mouth ulcers, lumps, and red or white patches are widely recognised symptoms, Avangart Dental Clinic highlights lesser-known indicators that warrant urgent attention:
-
Unexplained numbness or tingling – If you experience persistent numbness in the tongue, lips, or other areas of the mouth, it could indicate nerve involvement in a developing tumour.
-
Ear pain without hearing loss – A continuous ache in the ear, particularly on one side, could be a sign of a tumour pressing on surrounding structures.
-
A change in your voice – Hoarseness or an unusual change in the way your voice sounds can sometimes be linked to throat or oral cancers.
-
A loose tooth that won’t heal – Unlike a standard dental issue, a tooth that becomes loose for no clear reason, particularly if accompanied by pain or swelling, could indicate cancer affecting the jawbone.
-
Persistent sore throat or feeling of something stuck in your throat – This sensation that doesn’t go away, even after drinking water or swallowing food, could be an early warning sign of cancer in the mouth or throat.
The importance of regular dental check-ups
Nina Gonzero , oral specialist at Avangart Dental Clinic, said: “Mouth cancer is often detected at a late stage because people don’t recognise the early symptoms. We urge everyone to get regular dental check-ups, as dentists are often the first to spot early warning signs.”
