Sara Davies says eliminating sugar from her diet has helped with her impressive weight loss.
The 40-year-old realised she needed to shed the pounds after doctors told her she had gestational diabetes during her pregnancies, and was at risk of type 2 diabetes.
The Dragons’ Den star said the “wake-up call” prompted her to rethink her lifestyle and diet and has since adapted healthier habits.
In a chat with Bella Magazine, Sara confirmed she had ditched sugar from her diet, although admits treating herself to the likes of wine and chocolate now and again.
“Yes, and I lost quite a bit of weight,” she shared.
“But actually, I haven’t lost anything recently. I’ve been going running a lot and even doing a little bit of weight training.
“So, I’m a lot fitter but the muscle weighs more than the fat.”
What also helped Sara get to a healthier size 12 is running and following some of the late Michael Mosley’s diet plans, a mix of regimes such as calorie counting and fasting.
The entrepreneur says some of the plans are “about reversing type two diabetes” with the help of ditching the sugar.
Consuming too much sugar can make an impact on your health in a number of ways, such as increasing the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
According to Spire Healthcare, it can also contribute to weight gain. The website explains: “Foods and drinks containing high levels of sugar (eg cakes, pastries, fizzy drinks, fruit juices) or highly processed carbohydrates (eg white bread, white rice, white pasta) have a high glycaemic index.
“This means they’re quickly digested and consequently the feeling of fullness goes away faster.
“That makes it more likely that you’ll eat again sooner or eat larger portions.”
The website adds that with high-sugar foods often being high in calories, this can then further the likelihood of putting on weight.
In contrast, foods containing low sugar and low glycaemic index are best to maintain a healthy weight.
