A 31-year-old Petrolia man was arrested Saturday night and charged with cruelty to animals and refusing to give a breath sample after ducks and a Canada goose were killed earlier that day by a pickup truck in a city park.

People were feeding ducks and geese in Centennial Park around 2:30 p.m. when they saw a dark coloured pickup truck drive into a nearby parking lot.

“The truck remained parked in a corner for a few minutes before revving its engine and driving directly through the flock of birds, striking four of them,” police said.

The truck left and headed east on London Road. Police arrived and found two dead ducks, a dead Canada goose, and another injured duck.

The injured duck later died. Police asked the public for help Saturday evening tracking down the pickup truck, a newer dark Dodge Ram with various custom details.

“Officers demanded the driver provide a sample of his breath into an approved screening device, however, he refused,” police said.

Brandon Norton, 31, from Petrolia is charged with animal cruelty and refusing to give a breath demand, police said. He was released on a police undertaking.

The pickup was seized for a week and the man’s licence was suspended for three months.

MAN ARRESTED FOR FAKE OPIOID PRESCRIPTIONS

A London man is charged after an investigation into fake prescriptions for opioids being sent to Sarnia-area pharmacies.

Fraudulent prescriptions for oxycodone and hydrocodone were sent to pharmacies in Sarnia, Corunna, and Glencoe between Jan. 21 and Jan. 29. Officers arrested a man on Jan. 30 who was attempting to claim one of the prescriptions at a Sarnia pharmacy.

Zachariah Behar-Bruce, 25, from London is charged with uttering a forged document and fraud, police said. He was held for a bail hearing.

Sarnia police want to speak to other area pharmacists who may have received similar fake prescriptions. They’re asked to call Det. Const. Shawn Munro at 519-344-8861 extension 6179.
