A fresh teaser trailer for the much-anticipated sequel to the horror sensation M3GAN has been released, confirming a popular fan theory about the fate of the murderous doll.

The eerie clip, which features the killer doll dancing to Chappell Roan’s Femininomenon, was first shown at the Grammy Awards on February 2 as part of the promotion for the upcoming sequel, M3GAN 2.0. The teaser is also available for viewing on YouTube.

In the climax of the original film, M3GAN (portrayed by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis) meets a grisly end at the hands of her creator, Gemma (played by Alison Williams), after embarking on a deadly rampage. The blurb accompanying the teaser reveals that the sequel will take place two years after the events of the first film, with Gemma now a renowned author advocating for government regulation of A.I.

However, it emerges that the technology behind M3GAN has been stolen and used to develop a military-grade weapon named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno). When Amelia starts to revolt against humans, the only thing that can halt her is a resurrected M3GAN.

The synopsis of the film states: “With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realises that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I b***h is about to meet her match.”

Fans of the runaway hit M3GAN have been buzzing with speculation about the sequel’s plot and the fate of the infamous doll, anticipating a showdown reminiscent of the iconic Terminator 2. It seems their theories weren’t far off the mark, reports the Mirror.

The follow-up will see director Gerard Johnstone return to helm the project. Cast members reprising their roles include Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Gemma’s colleagues Cole, and Tess, with Violet McGraw playing Gemma’s niece, Cady.

There are also fresh faces joining in, such as Aristotle Athari from Saturday Night Live, Timm Sharp, and Jemaine Clement from What We Do in the Shadows, though details of their characters are yet to be disclosed.

M3GAN made waves at the box office upon its debut, boasting the largest opening weekend of any PG-13 rated horror movie since A Quiet Place Part II and grossing upwards of $180 million globally, on a modest budget of $12 million.

Devotees have taken to the teaser trailer’s comment section to express their excitement for the franchise’s latest chapter. One film fan shared: “Yass M3gan is back this is going to be a hot slasher summer,” and another, referencing the doll’s viral dance move, commented: “Embracing the meme for a movie teaser is such a power move, I just hope the movie is just as good.”

M3GAN 2.0 will be released in UK cinemas on June 27, 2025
