Carlisle United are considering a shock approach to Steven Gerrard as their new manager following the sacking of Mike Williamson, according to reports.
The League Two club, currently sitting at the bottom of the table, are exploring the possibility of bringing in the former Liverpool legend in a desperate bid to avoid dropping out of the EFL.
The club’s American owners, who took control at Brunton Park in November 2023, have raised the prospect of approaching Gerrard, who recently left his role at Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, according to the Daily Mail.
Carlisle’s situation has become increasingly desperate, with the club currently five points adrift of safety in League Two.

The Cumbrians have experienced significant managerial turnover, with Williamson’s departure coming on transfer deadline day after bringing in 12 new players during the January window.
This follows a similar pattern to August, when Paul Simpson was dismissed a day after the summer transfer window closed, having also signed 12 players.
Gerrard’s managerial career began with remarkable success at Rangers, where he secured their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade.

He then moved to Aston Villa in November 2021, but his tenure lasted just 11 months, recording 13 wins in 40 matches.
At Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard guided the club to sixth place in his first season and transformed their off-field operations.
The 44-year-old left the Saudi club by mutual consent last week, departing with a record of 23 wins from 59 matches and the team placed 12th out of 16 in the Saudi Pro League table.
Speaking about his departure from Al-Ettifaq last Thursday, Gerrard expressed gratitude to the club’s leadership.
“I want to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the fans, and everyone involved for the opportunity and the support during my time here, especially the president, Mr. Samer, CEO Mr Hamad and the head of football committee Mr. Hatim,” he said.
