This weekend, Sir Grayson Perry was unveiled on The Masked Singer UK after serenading the audience as the character Kingfisher for weeks.
Fans of the ITV programme will recall the moment Kingfisher enjoyed a bird’s-eye view of the scene when singing icon Macy Gray, who had been appearing as Toad In The Hole on the show, abruptly walked off stage.
It later emerged that the celebrated hitmaker had been taken aback by her departure, this after she’d wowed with her impressive stint on the American adaptation of the show.
Speaking about the unforgettable episode, Grayson shared more details with This Morning presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, who were eager to hear more about what had happened.
Ben probed the accomplished artist, saying: “Were you watching the other singers and guessing as you were going along?” reports the Mirror.
“I was trying,” confessed the ITV sensation, hinting that he might have figured out one of his fellow competitors, adding: “I mean Macy Gray has a very distinctive voice, but I thought, ‘is she really going to do it?’ because she’s amazing.
“But when they took the mask off…” He then gave a facial expression reflecting his reaction to the intense moment, followed by laughter.
“And she stormed off, of course,” Ben prompted, to which Grayson acknowledged: “She looked pretty cross, yeah.” Cat was quick to point out that the contemporary artist had outlasted many of the professional vocalists in the contest. Congratulating him, she said, “You must be proud.”
Grayson shot back with a reality check on the nature of the competition, saying, “I am, but I’m also under no illusion that it’s a singing contest. ” He disclosed his strategic approach to garnering votes.
He confided in the hosts about his premeditated choice to pick the “cutest” costume offered by ITV producers, reasoning that the show’s young viewers were a key demographic in the voting process.
Having watched previous seasons, Grayson noted how far some stars had gone by simply captivating kids with their costumes and stage charm.
Admitting to his calculated decision, the TV celebrity divulged that he specifically chose his feathery ensemble to charm the children watching from both home and the studio audience.
The Masked Singer returns to ITV1, this Saturday from 7pm.
