The actor who played Meghan Markle’s character’s father in Suits has made a joke about the Duchess of Sussex in a new show.

In a recent episode of “Elsbeth”, aired on Thursday, the show made a playful reference to the Duchess of Sussex through actor Wendell Pierce’s character.

The episode follows Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) as she investigates a suspicious death at an upmarket wellness centre.

Captain Wagner, played by Pierce, briefs Elsbeth about a case involving a deceased man last seen at “some fancy spa where celebrities and the royals go”.

In a notable quip, Wagner remarks: “The global press was already trying to frame Meghan Markle, and she wasn’t even there!”

The reference carries particular significance as Pierce, 61, previously portrayed Meghan’s father on the legal drama “Suits” from 2011 to 2019.

Meghan filmed her final scenes for the series in 2017, coinciding with her engagement to Prince Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex, then 36, subsequently left the show as she prepared for her new life in Britain.

Her departure from “Suits” preceded her 2018 marriage to the Duke of Sussex, marking her transition from television actress to royal life.

Pierce recently shared memories of his final scene with Meghan during a March 2024 appearance on “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?”

“It was the last night of working and I said, ‘Meghan, your life is going to change, and you’re going to be in a bubble, but just always remember, no matter what, I’m your friend, you have lots of friends,'” Pierce recalled.

He continued with his supportive message: “We’re always thinking about you, we’ll always be there for you. And you know, no matter where you are, always know you have a friend in me.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made headlines in 2020 when they announced their departure from royal duties.

The couple confirmed in February 2021 that they would not return to their senior roles within the Royal Family.

They subsequently relocated to California with their two children, Archie, now five, and Lilibet, now three.
