Ferrari vice chairman Piero Ferrari has drawn parallels between the generational dynamic of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to that seen in tennis between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic.
The son of Enzo Ferrari believes the age gap between his Formula 1 drivers presents an intriguing battle of youth versus experience.
The comparison comes as 27-year-old Leclerc prepares to partner with 40-year-old Hamilton, who joins Ferrari for the 2025 season.
Leclerc has established himself as Ferrari’s leading driver since joining the team in 2019, having previously seen off teammates Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz.

The Monegasque’s commitment to the team is secured with a contract until 2029.
Hamilton arrives at Maranello as Formula 1’s most decorated driver, holding records for wins (105), poles (104) and podiums (202).
The partnership could create the fiercest inner-team battle of Leclerc’s career, with Hamilton pursuing a record eighth world title.
Speaking to Autosprint, Piero Ferrari said: “It’s always been like this between teammates. It’s part of the game.”
He added: “In Charles’ case, there’s also the generational issue that we’re witnessing in tennis with Sinner and other kids.

“The freshness of the youngsters versus the experience and solidity of those who are many years older.”
Ferrari expressed optimism about the partnership, stating: “I’m sure that the rivalry between Hamilton and Leclerc will be able to bring advantages to both of them.”
The tennis comparison gains relevance as 23-year-old Sinner recently claimed his third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

This success contrasts with Djokovic’s recent challenges, with the 24-time Grand Slam champion withdrawing from the 2025 Australian Open semi-finals due to injury.
Similar questions about longevity could face Hamilton at Ferrari, having joined the team at age 40 rather than at his career peak.
However, Piero Ferrari remains confident in the British driver’s capabilities despite the age factor.

Addressing age concerns directly, Piero Ferrari told Autosprint: “True, but he is healthy. He is in good shape both physically and mentally.”
The Ferrari vice chairman dismissed suggestions that Hamilton’s age could be problematic.
“I don’t think [his] age is a problem at all,” Ferrari stated. “He accepted the challenge with great enthusiasm, so he is sure of his possibilities.”
