Over 20,000 customers are still without electricity across Northern Ireland due to the aftermath of Storm Éowyn as NIE Networks warns customers to be cautious of scammers posing as their staff.

Approximately 23,500 customers remain without electricity across Northern Ireland according to a spokesperson from NIE, with power now restored to 261,500 properties following the extensive damage to the electricity network caused by Storm Éowyn.

“Our primary focus is to restore power to all affected customers across Northern Ireland. We have over 1400 staff escalated, as well as additional electrical and industrial employees from other agencies and jurisdictions,” they added.

“Over the coming days there may be occasions when householders experience interruption to their electricity supply as we undertake permanent repairs and work to restore all those impacted. Employees from our contact centre may also be in contact to check that supply has been restored.

“We are particularly keen to again remind the public to maintain safety around any damaged electricity equipment and never approach a broken pole or overhead power lines, and keep children and animals away.”

Meanwhile, NIE Networks has warned customers of scammers posing as staff.

“We’ve had reports of fake texts and emails from people posing as NIE Networks staff urging customers to make compensation claims. We are not sending these – do not click links or share details,” they posted on social media.

“Block and report. Stay safe.”
