Wayne Rooney has been given the green light to work under Thomas Tuchel by former England star Gary Pallister, who thinks he should operate in the international scene following his recent dismissal from Plymouth.

The 39-year-old was axed by the Championship strugglers on New Year’s Eve after just several months at the helm.

Rooney has struggled in management, with his dire spell at Plymouth coming following a troublesome stint in charge of Birmingham.

It is currently unclear what the future holds of a man widely considered to be one of the best footballers of his generation.

But Pallister, speaking to Punters Lounge, who offer the latest horse racing betting, believes Rooney should work under Tuchel with England.

The former centre-back, who made 22 appearances for the Three Lions during his own playing days, said: “Could Wayne Rooney do a job on England’s coaching staff under Thomas Tuchel? Absolutely, who wouldn’t listen to Wayne given all he did in the game?

“Manchester United’s top scorer and formerly England’s top scorer, no one knows more about him when it comes to scoring goals and being a world class striker.

“Having said that, I’m sure Wayne will be disappointed that his managerial career has not gone the way he wants and I think first and foremost he’d like to go back into management.

“I don’t know that for definite, but if somebody wanted to see him come in as a striker coach players will always listen to that bit more from a guy who has been there and done it.

“I’m sure players would certainly be very attentive to what has to say about being a top-class striker.”

Tuchel started his job as England manager at the start of the month.

He is currently preparing for his first match in charge, which will be against Albania on March 21.

As for Rooney, he’s currently spending some time with his family as he licks his wounds and prepares to go again.

He had arrived at Plymouth back in the summer confident of keeping them in the Championship.

However, the Pilgrims never really got going under his stewardship and results have since worsened, with the club rooted to the bottom of the table.

Rooney working under Tuchel would likely excite England fans.
