As the winter cold sets in, many find themselves cranking up their heating to stay warm. However, it’s common for rooms to take a while to heat up properly. A plumber from Your Plumber has now offered some advice on how to get your room cosy more quickly, potentially saving you both time and money.

To improve heating efficiency, the professional suggests clearing any obstructions from your radiators. Large items like sofas should be rearranged so they’re not soaking up the heat from the radiator, and moving them will make your room feel warmer.

To better “channel the warmth into the room”, the plumber suggested people should “put shelves above any radiators to stop wasted hot air rising.”

Additionally, they advise to “cover a thin sheet of card with tinfoil and place it behind your radiators.” This easy DIY trick will “reflect the heat back into the room”, helping to speed up the warming process and keep the temperature stable for longer.

It’s equally important to “bleed your radiators” to get “rid of air pockets”. To check if bleeding is needed, feel each radiator to make sure it heats up uniformly, not just at the bottom.

Mark Ingram, a technical gas and plumbing tutor at Engineering Real Results (ERR), has highlighted the significance of bleeding radiators, especially as temperatures drop: “As time goes on and the temperatures get cooler the demand will only get higher and people may find they have to wait days for an engineer to become available to fix their problem.”

He advised: “If when you touch all of the radiators you notice any cold spots, you might need to bleed air out of the system, which is an easy job people can do themselves.” Mark also cautioned: “With bigger concerns, you should always seek advice from a registered Gas Safe engineer.”
