• Welp: Volkswagen just cancelled its plans to bring its ID.7 EV to Canada and the U.S.
  • The car, originally set to go on sale here summer 2024, would have been the size of a Passat
  • The automaker says it’s recognizing EV sedans can be a tough sell in North America

Following a protracted game of will-they-or-won’t-they, Volkswagen has confirmed it will not be bringing its ID.7 all-electric sedan to our market, citing an overall downturn in EV sales. According to fellow Canucks at Guide de L’Auto in Quebec, VW dealers received the news via email earlier this week, and the restructured plans were further confirmed by PR communication officials here in Canada.

This cancellation shouldn’t be unexpected, given various and sundry world events which have and continue to impact the take-rate on EVs in many markets, particularly here in North America. It doesn’t help that sedan body styles aren’t outrageously popular when compared to the likes of SUVs and crossovers, either. Volkswagen had already delayed the ID.7’d arrival from its original mid-2024 launch date.

It is suggested the car would have packed 282 horsepower and 402 lb-ft of torque, with a 77-kWh (net) battery pack hove underneath to provide an estimated range in the ballpark of about 600 clicks (373 miles) judged by the endlessly optimistic European testing standards.

Rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations may have been on the table. Charging would have maxed out at 175 kW on this application of the MEB platform, which is all most DC fast-chargers around here can realistically heave out at any given time anyway.

Lately, the company has chosen to focus its electric efforts on the ID.4 crossover and funky ID.Buzz van. While the former is of the correct size and shape sought by most shoppers in this country, it is the van which is receiving all the attention (ahem, buzz, ahem). Our own Stephanie Wallcraft drove a 2025 model late last year, and enjoyed its ability to spread a bit of joy to onlookers whilst being distinct from just about everything else on the road.
