The PSNI has confirmed officers are searching for a potentially “dumped” weapon in Dungannon town centre this morning after a handgun was reportedly pointed at a taxi driver.

Police had previously said they were “dealing with an incident” in the town, with the incident resulting in disruption to businesses and access from the public.

In an updated statement a PSNI spokesperson said a 46-year-old man has been arrested.

“At around 5.30am a taxi driver reported that a man armed with what was described as a handgun, had pointed the weapon at his vehicle and then drove off,” they said.

“Police located a suspect on Northland Row a short time later however a weapon was not recovered.”

PSNI Inspector Long added: “We are currently holding a scene in the town centre and we are carrying out searches in order to establish if a weapon has been dumped in the vicinity.

“If anyone should locate what they believe to be a firearm, please do not touch it and contact police immediately.”

Earlier, local DUP councillor Clement Cuthbertson confirmed police have the area cordoned off and added: “No details at present to if it is people or storm related.”
