If you’re in the market for a pair of trousers that strike the perfect balance between style and comfort, allow me to introduce you to my latest wardrobe staple that shoppers have been snapping up in every shade. The M&S Denim Drawstring Wide-Leg Trousers have been earning rave reviews from fashion enthusiasts recently, and having tested them out myself, I can certainly see why.

I first laid eyes on these cotton-rich denim trousers in-store on a mannequin, instantly drawn to their vibrant poppy red colour which seems ideal for spring. However, what really sealed the deal for me was their adjustable stretchy waistband – as someone who frequently experiences bloating, this was a complete game-changer.

Composed of 70% cotton, these trousers are the ultimate smart-casual wardrobe essential. They’re thinner than your typical jeans, making them lighter and less ‘rigid’, but they still feel smart, enabling them to seamlessly transition from work to weekend plans.

Initially, I tried on my regular size 10, but found them to be slightly snug across the back, so I opted to size up for a more relaxed, slouchy look. I’m usually seen in cargo jeans, but thought these red trousers would make for a more polished but equally fashionable alternative.

These trousers boast a flattering wide-leg design with two side pockets and two additional pockets at the back, coming in petite, regular, and tall sizes, allowing for a tailored fit. What’s more, they’re extremely affordable, priced at £27.50 and available in four colours – black, light beige, indigo, and poppy.

One of the standout features of these trousers is their high waistband and drawstring fastening, making them an excellent choice for individuals who experience bloating or weight fluctuations. This design also ensures all-day comfort without feeling too constricting.

Many shoppers have praised this feature, with one five-star review stating: “I love jeans but I’m also someone who bloats. And these are the best of both worlds. Long, wide legged and not trying to cut me in half. Granted these are your causal denim trousers but they’re so multi functional I love them. I would say if your apple shaped they do grab in the tummy a little more than I’d like! “

I’ve found them incredibly easy to style, often choosing them over jeans or skirts. The red pair, in particular, pairs excellently with leopard print, a common theme in my wardrobe.

They’re versatile enough to be worn with casual tees and oversized jumpers, but they also pair well with a blazer or blouse for a more refined look. On the M&S website, these trousers have received a 4.3-star rating, with one shopper having purchased three pairs. They wrote: “Nice casual jeans good fit this is my 3rd pair ready for summer.”

Another commented: “Material was comfortable and very everyday. They are wide drawstring trousers and I was worried that they would swamp me but they don’t. Are a nice length and go well with big baggy jumpers. Perfect for dog walking.”

While most find the trousers true to size, a few have mentioned that the lengths can vary slightly. One shopper commented: “I like the style and fabric but the sizing! I am 5’6” and ordered 2 pairs in different colours but had to return as far too long to wear with trainers. I reordered in short, the tan fit perfectly but will be returning the denim as about 4 cm shorter than the tan pair.”

Though a fourth penned: “I purchased the poppy colour and they are a lovely shade of red. Nice change to straight leg jeans.”

Elsewhere, Nobody’s Child has these Red Linen-blend Relaxed Trousers for £65. They’re a little more casual, but thanks to their light and breathable fabric, would be a dream to style in the summer months. But if you’re looking for something smarter, these Red Elastic Back Wide Leg Trousers at Next cost £38 and are very much business at the front, comfort at the back with the elastic waist just at the back of the trouser.

But for me, it’s the M&S Denim Drawstring Wide-Leg Trousers you’ll find me living in for the foreseeable. Whether you’re dealing with bloating, on the hunt for stylish yet practical trousers, or simply looking for something that pairs well with various outfits, these trousers do it all. And at £27.50, I might just get them in every colour.
