Almost 273,000 vehicles are being recalled by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) amid battery failure fears.

Recall documents state that certain 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport models and 2022-2023 Maverick pick-up trucks are impacted.

It warned that the 12-volt battery may experience “internal weld”, leading to sudden battery degradation.

If this occurs when the vehicle is on the road, it may be unable to restart after an auto stop/start event or if the vehicle stalls.

The recall warned that either of these conditions could be accompanied by a loss of 12-volt accessories, including hazard lights, heightening the risk of an accident.

The “suspect” 12-volt batteries were introduced into production on February 5, 2020, and removed on October 20, 2022.

Ford said it would notify impacted owners by mail and instructed them to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to have it inspected for the presence of a Ford Absorbed Glass Mat. If one is not present, one will be installed.

STELLANTIS

The major conglomerate has issued a notice for owners of Jeep Cherokee models between the years 2017 and 2019 in response to a loss of drive power from a damaged power transfer unit (PTU).

In total, 63,082 vehicles will be included in the recall after Chrysler, which operates under the Stellantis brand in the United States, identified an issue which could cause unintended vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Recall documents state: “Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) US will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles. The remedy is under development.”

While only 2,890 Chevrolet Equinox all-wheel-drive electric vehicles have been included in the recall, there are concerns about its adaptive cruise control.

The adaptive cruise control may fail to engage the brakes as expected, due to incorrect brake module software. Dealers will update the software calibration in the brake system control module for free.

It comes just over a month after a previous recall notice which stated that 7,606 vehicles could have an insufficient pedestrian warning sound system.
