According to a driving expert, there’s a simple code you can type into Google which could help you pass your test. The former driving examiner, who goes by the handle @theexexaminer on TikTok, noted that all you need to do is type two letters and a number into the search bar.
Spreading the useful advice for people who have tests on the horizon, the motoring guru says that he’s “shocked more people don’t know this” adding that examiners or officials never say it.
He says that you should type in “DT1” into your search bar and this should bring up search results, one of which is an official gov.uk website. The one you click on should read Carrying out driving tests: examiner guidance – Guidance.
Looking through the website, the former examiner says: “It’s just going to answer most of your questions and it’s also going to give you some extra little nuggets when it comes to an examiner’s marking.”
Scrolling through what’s on the website, he continues: “As you can see it’s got every sort of test from car driving test all the way up to HGV and everything in between. You can even see it’s got the guide to assessment and marking, the vehicle safety questions, the show me tell me questions and even the examiner’s test wordings.”
The site, which was updated just days ago on January 13 2025, includes the Car driving test section, full of guidance about the test.
For example, a section of the website read: “Driving tests are conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999 (as amended).” The test requirements are set out below:
- eyesight
- vehicle safety checks
- set exercises (one of the following):
- reverse parking (either into a bay or on the road)
- forward parking (into a bay)
- pull up on the right and reverse in a straight line
- controlled stop (angle start)
- 2 normal stops and hill start
- a minimum of 30 minutes of driving, which includes 20 minutes of independent driving
- emergency test – carried out in one of every three tests
They also warn that “the examiner should ask for the candidate by their full name, greet them pleasantly” as well as do the following:
- ask the candidate for their driving licence (and if not a photocard licence, then a valid passport) and their theory test (TT) pass certificate (if applicable)
- ask the candidate to read, confirm, and sign the insurance & residency declaration on the digital test report
Because of this, he says you will be more prepared what the examiner could ask you on the day. So whether you are doing your driving test for the first time or more, the guru says “it’s going to be a bit of a superpower knowing what’s coming on your test.”
