Dinos Men’s Basketball (9-3)
Friday, Jan. 24 | Calgary at Mount Royal | Kenyon Court | 8 P.M.
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary at Mount Royal | Kenyon Court | 7 P.M.

The Crowchild Classic weekend is here for Dinos hoops, with the men’s team heading across town to take on Mount Royal for two games at Kenyon Court. Friday’s tip time is set for 8 p.m., while Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m. Both games follow the women’s competition.

Calgary has gone up against stiff foes the last three weekends, going up against the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 10-ranked teams in the nation, with two of those three weekends coming on the road. The Dinos finished that stretch splitting those six matchups and sit at 9-3 on the season, now ranked third in the latest U SPORTS rankings. After pouring in a career-high 36 points in Saturday’s win over Manitoba, fourth-year guard Nate Petrone continues to lead the nation in scoring with an average of 25 points per game.

MRU heads into the weekend fifth in the Canada West Prairie Division standings with a 9-5 record. The Cougars split at Brandon last weekend and have just four games left to play after this rivalry weekend, going up against Alberta and Manitoba to close out the regular season.

The Dinos have owned this rivalry since MRU joined Canada West, going 17-1 against the Cougars in conference play. There have been plenty of close finishes though. Two seasons ago, Calgary won both games by single digits, including needing overtime in a 96-93 thriller. Last year, the Dinos won both games at Kenyon Court — 88-82 in the opener before pouring in 119 in a 16-point victory.

Dinos Women’s Basketball (9-3)
Friday, Jan. 24 | Calgary at Mount Royal | Kenyon Court | 6 P.M.
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary at Mount Royal | Kenyon Court | 5 P.M.

The Dinos women’s basketball team will put its perfect second half on the line as they travel across town this weekend to take on Mount Royal for the annual Crowchild Classic. Friday’s tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., with Saturday’s rematch set for 5 p.m. Both games will take place at Kenyon Court.

Calgary is 4-0 to start the new year, winning by an average of more than 30 points per game. Dating back to a first-semester road win over UBC, the Dinos have won their last five conference games and are once again ranked seventh in the latest U SPORTS top 10. After spending a good chunk of the year on the road, the schedule keeps the Dinos in town this weekend before hosting Brandon and Lethbridge the next two times out as the Scarlet & Gold won’t have to leave town until a Valentines weekend showdown at Regina.

The Cougars sit tied with the Dinos in the win column at 9-5 with two more games played heading into the weekend. Last time out, MRU swept Brandon on the road after a tough trip to Saskatchewan that saw the Huskies take both.

The Dinos own 17 of the 18 wins in the Crowchild Classic series, with the lone loss coming back in Feb. of the 2021-22 season. Last year, Calgary turned in wins of 90-47 and 74-48 on the MRU campus.

Dinos Men’s Volleyball (5-9)
Friday, Jan. 24 | Calgary vs. Trinity Western | Jack Simpson Gym | 7:30 P.M.
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary vs. Trinity Western | Jack Simpson Gym | 4 P.M.

Despite the fact there are still three weeks to play, it’s the final home weekend for the Dinos men’s volleyball team as they get set to host Trinity Western. It all starts Friday at 7:30 p.m. following the women’s matches, before opening the busy Saturday with a 4 p.m. first serve. Both contests are set for the Jack Simpson Gym.

Calgary is in a fight for a playoff spot with six matches left in the regular season. The Dinos sit in ninth place in the always-deep Canada West at 5-9. Despite a pair of road losses last weekend, they did pick up an important point and sit with 16 points heading into the weekend.

Trinity Western comes to town with a 9-5 record — good for fifth place in the league standings. It has been an up-and-down season for the Spartans. In the new year alone, they kicked off the second semester with a pair of 3-0 losses at the hands of Manitoba, only to bounce back and take down top-ranked Alberta 3-2 both Friday and Saturday of last week. Those results sent TWU into this week’s top 10, checking in at No. 7.

The Dinos are looking for their first win over the Spartans since 2016.

Dinos Women’s Volleyball (3-11)
Friday, Jan. 24 | Calgary vs. Trinity Western | Jack Simpson Gym | 6 P.M.
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary vs. Trinity Western | Jack Simpson Gym | 5:30 P.M.

Calgary’s women’s volleyball squad also closes out the home portion of its schedule this weekend, hosting Trinity Western in the Jack Simpson Gym Friday at 6 p.m. before a scheduled 5:30 p.m. start on Saturday following the men’s game.

After a 2-2 start to the season, it’s been a rough go for this year’s young Dinos team. They will be looking for their first win of the second semester as they make a push for a playoff spot. With six games to go, Calgary sits at 3-11 and in 12th place. The top 10 teams in the standings will qualify for this year’s conference tournament. The final two weekends of the year see the Dinos hit the road to Brandon (1-11) and MacEwan (0-12).

The Spartans are an uncharacteristic 5-9 through their first 14 games. Trinity Western hasn’t finished with a sub-.500 conference record since the 2004-05 campaign. Things won’t be easy for TWU down the stretch, either. After this weekend in Calgary, the Spartans have a home-and-home with second-seeded UFV (11-1) before hosting Saskatchewan (7-7) to close out the regular season.

Last year, the Dinos knocked off the No. 4 Spartans in Calgary late in the season in a five-set marathon of a match. TWU responded with a four-set win the following day — the final day of the regular season — for their seventh win in the last eight regular-season meetings between the two programs.

Dinos Women’s Hockey (6-12-2)
Friday, Jan. 24 | Calgary vs. Trinity Western | Father David Bauer Arena | 7 P.M.
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary vs. Trinity Western | Father David Bauer Arena | 2 P.M.

This is a big weekend for the Dinos women’s hockey program as they’ll battle Trinity Western — the team directly ahead of them in the conference standings for the final playoff spot — for two games in Father David Bauer Arena. Friday’s puck drop is set for 7 p.m. before Saturday’s rematch at 2 p.m.

Calgary comes into the weekend at 6-12-2 with 14 points through 20 games — seven points behind Trinity Western for the third and final playoff spot in the CW’s West Division. The Dinos are coming off a bye week and are looking for their first win of 2025 after losses to Mount Royal and Alberta to start the second semester.

It’s been a surprise season for Trinity Western, which comes to campus with a 10-11-1 record for 21 points through 22 games. If things hold, this would mark just the second post-season berth for the upstart Spartan program, also qualifying two seasons ago. TWU closes out the regular season hosting Alberta next weekend before returning to Calgary to take on Mount Royal.

While the Dinos hold a 7-5 edge in the all-time conference showdown with Trinity Western, the Spartans have won three of four so far this season against the Dinos —  all four coming in Langley, B.C.

Dinos Men’s Hockey (10-8-2)
Friday, Jan. 24 | Calgary at Trinity Western | Langley Events Centre | 8 P.M. MT
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary at Trinity Western | Langley Events Centre | 4 P.M. MT

With a playoff spot already clinched, the Dinos men’s hockey team will look to improve their seeding as they hit the road to take on Trinity Western for two games in Langley, B.C. It all starts Friday at 8 p.m. MT before Saturday’s puck drop, scheduled for 4 p.m. MT from the Langley Events Centre.

Despite being off this past weekend, the Dinos clinched a post-season berth as they can finish no lower than the third seed in the West Division. Calgary sits at 10-8-2 for 22 points through 20 games — good for third place, with the top three teams from each division advancing to this year’s playoff. The Scarlet & Gold will benefit from the return of head coach Mark Howell and top scorer Colson Gengenbach, who have been in Italy for the past two weeks with Team Canada at the 2025 FISU World University Games.

The Spartans sit at 3-17-2 for eight points through 22 games. With six games to go, TWU will be looking to set a program record for wins in a regular season since joining Canada West, set last year with four in just their third season in the conference.

Calgary still remains perfect with 12 wins and zero losses to TWU in league play. The two division foes have played four times already this year, with the Dinos winning all four – all in Calgary – by a combined 21-6.

Dinos Women’s Rugby 7s (0-0)
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary at Alberta | Foote Field | 10:44 A.M.
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary vs. UBC | Foote Field | 1:00 P.M.

Saturday, Jan. 25 | Calgary vs. Victoria | Foote Field | 4:00 P.M.
Sunday, Jan. 26 | Calgary vs. Trinity Western | Foote Field | 10 A.M.
Sunday, Jan. 26 | Calgary vs. Lethbridge | Foote Field | 12:38 P.M.

The 2025 rugby 7s season gets underway this weekend with a two-day tournament in Edmonton. Calgary will play five games over two days, starting Saturday against the host University of Alberta.

This marks the eighth season of rugby 7s in Canada West. This season’s tournament will be a straight round-robin format, with each team playing each other once. Last year, the Dinos finished 5-8-1 in rugby 7s to claim the CW bronze medal following the three tournaments.

Dinos Wrestling
Friday, Jan. 24 | Pronghorn Duals | 1st Choice Savings Centre
Saturday, Jan. 25 | Pronghorn Invitational | 1st Choice Savings Centre

This weekend marks the final regular-season action for the Dinos wrestling teams. Calgary travels down to startup program Lethbridge Friday for a dual meet with the Pronghorns before an invitational Saturday with a number of other Canada West rivals.

It’s been another strong season for the Dinos. The women’s program heads into the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation, while the men’s program sits at No. 4 in the latest U SPORTS top 10.

The Canada West championships are next up on the schedule, hosted this year by Saskatchewan on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Dinos Track & Field
Sunday, Jan. 26 | Dinos Classic | Jack Simpson Gym | 9:30 A.M.

Calgary’s track & field team is set to host its third and final home meet this weekend, welcoming local athletes for the annual Dinos Classic inside the Jack Simpson Gym Sunday with a scheduled 9:30 a.m. start.

It’s been a strong start for Calgary. The Dinos already earned their U SPORTS automatic qualifying standard in seven events. Last time out, the Scarlet & Gold won six events at the annual Golden Bear Open.

Up next, the Dinos will take a weekend off before heading back to Edmonton for the annual Pandas Challenge Feb. 7-8 before setting their sights on the Canada West Championships Feb. 21-22 in Regina.
