“Wrexham AFC can confirm that a first-team player has been involved in a car accident this morning on his way to training,” read a statement on Wrexham’s club website.

“It was a single car accident with no other vehicles involved and the relevant local authorities were quickly present at the scene.

“The player reported to the Club this morning and will undergo further medical checks.”

The Irish Independent has been informed that McClean suffered no injuries in the incident.

There were some negative messages appearing on X soon after the statement from Wrexham, with replies suggesting they ‘hoped’ McClean was involved in the car smash.

The Derry-born footballer has continued to attract negative attention after taking a stand not to wear a poppy for the annual UK Remembrance Day commemorations.

He also made headlines earlier this week for describing the town of Shrewsbury as a “cesspit full of inbreds” following a match loss.
