Netflix is starting to roll out price increases in a bid to ‘improve the service’. It comes after the platform brought in an extra 19million subscribers at the end of 2024.
The streaming platform says prices are going up in a number of countries – starting with the USA, Canada, Argentina and Portugal.
A spokesman said: “We will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix,” it said.
In the USA, a basic ad-free subscription is going up from $15.49 a month to $17.99 a month – £14.60. Subscriptions with adverts are also going up by a dollar to $7.99.
Netflix last put uop prices in October 2023, when UK subscriptions were also hiked. Asked when UK prices could rise, a Netflix spomesmnan said they had: “nothing to share right now”.
Netflix current has more than 300million subscribers across the world after launching the second season of Squid Game and a number of live sports events – including NFL, WWE and thePaul v Tyson fight. It hasbought the rights to the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031.
As of January 2025, Netflix offers a £4.99 per month plan in the UK. This plan includes advertisements, allows streaming on two devices simultaneously, and offers 1080p HD video quality. However, certain titles may be unavailable due to licensing restrictions, and offline downloads are not permitted.
The standard subscription is£10.99 per month. This ad-free plan allows streaming on two devices simultaneously in 1080p HD. It also permits downloading content on two devices for offline viewing. There is also a premium subscription at£17.99 per month. This ad-free plan supports streaming on up to four devices simultaneously in Ultra HD (4K) and HDR, with immersive surround sound available for select content. It also allows downloads on up to six devices.
Netflix has discontinued its “Basic” plan, which was previously priced at £6.99 per month. Existing subscribers on this plan may retain it, but new subscribers must choose from the current options.
Additionally, Netflix has implemented measures to prevent account sharing outside a single household. Subscribers on Standard and Premium plans can add extra members outside their household for an additional £4.99 per person per month.
