Switching out salt for a healthier substitute could offer a range of health benefits, including helping to control cholesterol levels.
Despite being a key ingredient in many of our favourite meals, replacing salt with a specific alternative could bring numerous health advantages, as per a 2004 study.
It’s well-known that too much sodium, found in salt, can severely impact our overall health, with several connections being made to heart disease.
However, as health professionals highlight the extensive negative effects of salt on our wellbeing, a blend of lemon and orange peel can offer a similarly tasty replacement.
By peeling either fruit, you can create a salt-like substance by baking the peels of two oranges and two lemons at 90 degrees for an hour, or until fully dry.
A 2004 study by US and Canadian researchers discovered that citrus fruit peels can lower cholesterol more significantly than some prescription drugs, without any side effects.
Science Daily noted: “The compounds, called polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs), are similar to other plant pigments found in citrus fruits that have been increasingly linked to health benefits, including protection against cancer, heart disease and inflammation.”
Once ready, the ground orange and lemon peel can be mixed with 100 grams of salt and turmeric to make a healthy food garnish, reports Surrey Live.
Healthline has highlighted the numerous health perks of lemon peel, which is packed with antioxidants like vitamin C, known to bolster our immune system and cut down disease risk. In a recent TikTok video, Dr Karan Raj, author of This Book May Save Your Life: Everyday Health Hacks to Worry Less and Live Better,” enlightened his followers about the advantages of eating orange peel.
He explained, “The orange peel itself is rich in a soluble dietary fibre called pectin. The peels contain high levels of Vitamin C – sometimes as much as, if not more, the flesh of the fruit itself.”
He further noted, “The peel contains carotenoids and polyphenols which are anti-inflammatory compounds.”
Antioxidants play a crucial role in managing cholesterol levels, which, when too high, can clog blood vessels and elevate the risk of heart issues and strokes.
