Construction work to improve a bus junction is set to begin next month with work to take place through most of 2025. The project, which will cost £2 million, will improve the Portway Park & Ride bus entrance, located on the A4 in Shirehampton.
The layout of the bus junction will change in order to allow buses to access the site from northwest of the site, as opposed to the existing layout which only allows the number 9 service to use the site. The bus junction will be widened and reconfigured during the nine-month project.
The work will commence on Monday, February 17 and will also see a new pedestrian crossing installed next to the bus junction. The area will be resurfaced and more signage will be added.
On completion of the improvements, the 9 service (Brislington Park & Ride to Portway Park & Ride) could be developed and improve connectivity from the city centre to Avonmouth. In addition, four new services could stop at the site:
-
3 (city centre to Cribbs Causeway)
-
4 (city centre to Cribbs Causeway)
-
10 (Bristol Parkway to Severn Beach via Avonmouth and Southmead Hospital)
-
11 (Bristol Parkway to Avonmouth via Southmead Hospital)
Councillor Ed Plowden, Chair of the Transport & Connectivity Committee at Bristol City Council, said: “These works will bring the Portway Park & Ride a step closer to becoming the transport hub that our residents and commuters deserve. A remodelled bus entrance will complement Portway’s new railway station that opened in 2023.
“Not only will the site be an even more useful resource for people in the area, but it will offer more options to people commuting on established bus routes that serve communities in Avonmouth, Severnside and North Somerset. The new entrance will also mean the site can be used as new bus connections develop, including a direct shuttle bus to and from the YTL Arena in Filton when it opens.”
Throughout the nine month development, the A4 Portway will remain open but temporary traffic lights will be in operation to allow two-way traffic. As a result, delays are likely.
The 9 bus will use new bus stops on the A4 Portway whilst construction takes place. Seven trees will need to be removed, and three to be relocated nearby. However, 13 new trees will be planted on the site.
The project is being funded by the UK Government as part of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, which is administered by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority. It is estimated to cost £2 million.
