Aldi shoppers are in for a treat as the supermarket chain is offering a pack of hot beverages for less than £1, with an ingredient that might just be the secret to enhancing sleep quality.

The Mokate sachets have been spotted in Aldi’s famous middle aisle. Customers have two options to choose from, but it’s the Milky with Magnesium version that’s causing a stir.

This particular pack comes with 10 sachets of instant hot chocolate, currently available for the bargain price of 99p at Aldi, while stocks last. For those looking to indulge, the instructions suggest swapping out hot water for milk to achieve a creamier drink.

Celebrities like Taylor Swift have been reported to be fans of magnesium, an essential mineral that the NHS says “can help with sleep”. In a 2019 interview with Elle, Taylor revealed she takes magnesium for muscle health and energy.

Magnesium-rich foods include sugar-free cereals, wholemeal bread, brown rice, spinach, quinoa, black beans, tofu, and avocados. Magnesium is also key in producing hormones that are essential for maintaining bone health.

The daily magnesium intake recommendations vary, with men aged 19 to 64 requiring 300mg and women advised to aim for 270mg.

Each sachet from this Aldi pack adds a 56.3mg boost to your magnesium levels, contributing to the NHS’s suggested daily intake.

However, it’s crucial to avoid excessive magnesium consumption, as intakes over 400mg per day may lead to unpleasant side effects such as diarrhoea.

The Sleep Foundation has indicated that magnesium can help increase sleep duration, enhance sleep quality, and lessen fatigue.

The mineral has been associated with sleep in a number of studies, with some suggesting it could help regulate melatonin – the hormone that controls our sleep and circadian rhythms. A balanced and varied diet is recommended to get the necessary amount of magnesium.

If this isn’t enough, there are other ways to boost your magnesium intake, such as supplements in powder or pill form. However, before making any major changes to your diet or starting a new supplement, it’s always a good idea to consult a health professional to ensure it’s appropriate for you.

Drinks like hot chocolate should also be enjoyed in moderation due to their high sugar content.
